Rio de Janeiro’s iconic scene of sun-kissed beach beside the wave-paved promenade of Avenida Atlântica is the setting for Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana. This towering hotel stands directly in front of the legendary Copacabana Beach, just a short walk from Ipanema Beach, with Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and Sugar Loaf Mountain reached within minutes by car. This is one of the city’s best locations and as the avenue thrums with life outside, Fairmont Rio provides a sophisticated touch of 1950’s glamour inside.

This bygone glitz and charm is spread across 375 rooms and suites, two pools, a restaurant, two bars and 13 meeting rooms. Guests staying in one of the 69 rooms and suites categorised as “Gold Rooms” are given exclusive access to the Gold Lounge where daily gourmet breakfast and cocktails are served, and private check-ins and check-outs take place.

All rooms and suites feature thick, plump beds, shiny parquet flooring and warm gold lighting with varying views of the city that include the Arpoador rocks, beach and ocean with Sugar Loaf Mountain in the distance. Uninterrupted views of Sugar Loaf Mountain are seen from Fairmont Rio’s Spirit Copa Bar, a casual bar serving tiraditos, pinchos and tapas alongside local spirits and cocktails. But for a caffeine fix head to Coa & Co Café where the fine art of a cup of coffee is taken very seriously. Fresh seafood and prime grilled meat are Marine Restô’s speciality, prepared to precision by the chefs in the open kitchen for all diners to see. However, the restaurant’s spectacular view of the ocean may prove more distracting between courses.
